fish assignment
Students of Andy Danylchuk, Environmental Conversation,
are finishing up their fish assignment due Thurs. 11 Oct.
They may use articles, such as found in Zoological Record,
Agricola, CAB, or other databases. Books are sometimes
helpful and government documents, as long as a document
is involved, Websites are not acceptable, esp. Wikipedia.

I have a guide for a former
Fisheries Science & Management class, taught by Francis Juanes, who is no
longer at UMA. It’s in the list of course guides for Environmental
Conservation. http://guides.library.umass.edu/NRC571
It is also linked on the
Environmental Conservation subject guide under the tab “ECo courses”. (ECo for
Env Conservation)
For many economically
important fish found in New England or Mid-Atlantic waters, there is a great
series published online by the National Marine Fisheries Service called Essential Fish
Habitat (scroll down for linked species list).
I just had a guy looking for
books on Red Snapper. We went looking for an Essential Fish Habitat publication
for his species, but there wasn’t one. Ultimately, I went to the NMFS site
(they’re part of NOAA – Nat’l Oceanographic and Atmospheric
Admin).
I put the species name
(common name or scientific name – in this case, Lutjanus campechanus) into the
search box, top right, and a bunch of great stuff came up.
Just some hints, if you want
to try helping them yourself.
Best,
Naka
