For many economically important fish found in New England or Mid-Atlantic waters, there is a great series published online by the National Marine Fisheries Service called Essential Fish Habitat (scroll down for linked species list).

I just had a guy looking for books on Red Snapper. We went looking for an Essential Fish Habitat publication for his species, but there wasn’t one. Ultimately, I went to the NMFS site (they’re part of NOAA – Nat’l Oceanographic and Atmospheric Admin).

I put the species name (common name or scientific name – in this case, Lutjanus campechanus) into the search box, top right, and a bunch of great stuff came up.

Sociology extra credit assignment heads up!

This assignment will go out next week to about 40 students. The instructor is not sure how many will opt for the extra credit.

Task 9: Conduct your literature review
Each student must find one peer reviewed journal article published since 1990 in either a sociology or criminology journal relevant to his or her research topic (the crime you are studying). You need to find an article that helps you learn more about the type of research that has been done on your crime. The article should also look interesting to you. I recommend avoiding articles that use sophisticated statistics. The article may or may not also be about gender. If you are unable to find anything on your specific crime (which is unlikely) you should expand your
search to arrests more broadly.

☐ OPTIONAL: Social science librarian, Steve McGinty, extra credit opportunity. Steve McGinty actually announced that he was going on sabbatical this semester the day before our library scavenger hunt. I have modified this extra credit so that you still have a chance to get up to ten extra credit points and be more confident that you have found a journal article that meets the guidelines described above.

The modified extra credit has two options:

☐ 4: Select “Sociological Abstracts.”
☐ 5: Enter your search terms (e.g., the offense you are studying, maybe also “gender,” “sex,” “arrests”).
☐ 6: Click the box to limit to “peer reviewed.”
☐ 7: Limit the search to articles that were published in 1990 or after.
☐ 8: If you get an unreasonable number of hits, revise your search terms to limit to the title of the article, abstract, or subject.
☐ 9: Read through the abstracts and find the article that you think is most relevant to your paper and most interesting to you. Download the pdf of that article for your personal use. If the pdf is not available request the article through interlibrary loan.
☐ 10: Read the article.
☐ 11: Write down what the author’s main argument was.

I have put the library assignment and the schedule of the 9 KIN 100 sessions into the clipboard 3 of the sessions are booked into the 1620 classroom, and the TA/instructor will be stopping by the Ref desk to get the key to the room. Comp Lit sci fi title

Students have been coming in asking for a copy of Karel Capek's R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots) for a Comp Lit course on science fiction. There are some copies in UMass and the Five Colleges, but they may soon be checked out.
