GEO-SCI 370 Urban Geography Class Assignment

Paper due on Thursday.
Assignment:
Each student has been assigned a U.S. city. Required to use census information and to produce a couple of charts/graphs on changes in the city's population and economy over time. Exactly which indices, which time jumps, etc, are up to them.
Sources:
Get information off the census.gov website or from paper volumes at the library.
For paper volumes, they should be directed toward the decennial volumes for the SMSA or MSA their city is located in - often times the current volume with have as much historical information as they need, too. (These are located in the CENSUS REFERENCE SECTION, Floor 6)
For online historical censuses, here is the URL:http://www.census.gov/prod/www/abs/decennial/1950.htm this is for 1950 - changing the year at the end- eg - 1950.htm gets other years) -- they can also reach the same place by searching on "1950 census" from www.census.gov

English 112 Fall 08

The onslaught of Eng 112 classes has begun and will continue over the next month. All sessions will be taught by TO's, following the same model as last year.

Emily A. has sent two links that may be useful for reference staff:
1. For students, there is a college writing LibGuide which is linked to the course guides page, or searchable from the LibGuides site:
http://guides.library.umass.edu/collegewriting
2. For TO's, there is an Undergraduate Services library blog, which has the handouts that TO's may need for their sessions:

Re-configuration of 1620 classroom

Due to popular demand, and the results of Steve's Doodle Poll asking for opinions about the location of the instructor's station in the 1620 classroom, I have sent a sys-help ticket asking that the instructor's station be moved back to its original position, in the center of the room near the door. Systems staff said that they will make the move as soon as the broken ceiling projector has been repaired and can be reinstalled, so they will do every at the same time. (bl, 10/10)

Some time over the weekend the Aleph Station I.D., UMA_DUBOIS, "went missing". It is necessary to unfreeze the computer before reinstating the preset station i.d. Teacher conference.

Scanned items available on website

This came to my attention today. A man was looking for the Encyclopedia of Massachusetts-genealogical...the status in the catalog says: In process (From scanning).

I spoke with Laura W. who said that this is one of the items sent to Boston for scanning. Laura came out and said that it might be back on the shelf...also she pointed out that an electronic version is at:

http://www.archive.org/index.php

On typing in the title in the internet archive, it brings up our scanned item!

I phoned Sheryl Crowe and asked to have the raised shelf between the two Ref. Desks repaired.
The shelf is very loose. PJ 9-24

Wireless in Du Bois (update of 9/24/08)

From Terry Warner:
Wireless in the DuBois Building is approximately half completed. The lower level through floor 8 has been completed. Floor 9 should be completed by the end of this week. Floors 13, 23, 24 & 26 have also been completed. At the pace they are going, the entire building should be wireless by the end of October.
As a result of the demand to get this project completed, staff and students can expect to be inconvenienced by experiencing some drilling noises during the day. The noise will be intermittent and not restricted to any particular time of the day. Your patience during these times is appreciated.

Calipari Workstation Login Info, Fall 2008

As of 8/08, the libstaff login no longer works. Instructors and students must log into OIT workstations with their own NetIDs.

Instructors: Log in to the instructor workstation with your own NetID and password. (Domain should be “UMASS.EDU/Kerberos Login.”) It may take a few minutes the first time you log in, but should be quicker on subsequent logins.

Students: Students should log into workstations with their own NetIDs and passwords. (Domain should be “UMASS.EDU/Kerberos Login.”) You may want to ask students to log in as they enter the room so that as many as possible are set to go for the beginning of the session. OIT is creating signage for Calipari asking students to log in as soon as they arrive for a class.

[A note about SynchronEyes: A list of NetIDs of library liaisons and others who regularly teach on Calipari is being sent to OIT, and those people should find that SynchronEyes starts up automatically when they log in to the Calipari instructor workstation. If SynchronEyes does not start up for you but you would like to use it when you teach, please email Emily Alling (ealling@library.umass.edu) with your NetID, and she can get you added to the list. Students do not need to do anything special; SynchronEyes will run in the background on their machines as long as it is active on the instructor’s workstation. ]

NetID doesn’t work/Student doesn’t remember their NetID/password: visit an OIT Help Desk consultant at the LC Desk. In the short term, they may need to share a workstation with a neighbor.

Questions? Please contact Emily Alling, library contact for Calipari (ealling@library.umass.edu) or Marta Chudzinski, OIT Computer Classrooms (mchudzinski@oit.umass.edu) – or ask at the LC Desk.
