Pidgin Issues

I am happy to be the contact for Pidgin issues in the future.  Anything I can't resolve myself I will then forward to Systems.  I will also make sure the usernames and passwords for all four services (AIM, Yahoo, etc.) are in the opening procedures.

Volunteering at school

Mass Newspaper trial

I emailed about this: MBLC and MLS are trying to drum up funds from Mass libraries for a joint subscription to Newsbank's Mass Newspapers. Annette is putting a trial on the db list and Ref is listed as where to get username and password. Both are:

Trial only goes to 8/31.

I've found access to be a bit spotty -- maybe they only have a certain number of simultaneous users for the trial? Clearing my cache between attempts seemed to help.

Stacks Management

If a patron is having trouble locating a book in the stacks (and you have checked and it should be there) call Stacks Management at 5-3796.  They will send someone to the Info or Ref Desk to help.  If you send them to Circulation they will most likely be told to request the item.  They don't usually send the Circ/Reserves Desk students to the stacks.  I find by calling Stacks the patrons get better and more immediate service.

Pidgin has been installed!

Pidgin has been installed on the Info Desk PC.  Dave and I (Annette) have added all of the different chat services, and it seems to be working fine.  Just click on the Pidgin icon on the desktop and it should all come up ready to go.  However we do not know how it works and if it will ding.

Update: Dave and I tested it and it does work.  We are currently working on getting the sound to function.

Lobby public computers

I contacted Leslie Schaler, chair of the Signage Committee, and asked that signs be prepared for the computers in the Du Bois lobby.  The computers at the west end are particularly confusing to users (the one on the right is a quick print station, the one on the left is Aleph only; no way a user would know that).  I put a temporary label on each of the west end computers.  The east end computers have access to the Library home page, Aleph, and Illiad.   PJ 7/3
